O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the lower three ever again. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines would read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's history . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
